A small team managed the final ringing session of the year at Broomfield College on New Year’s Eve. The recent wet weather held off apart from a brief shower and we managed to ring 32 birds, including 16 retraps. Redwing numbers were down to three from their peak of 20 at the previous session. Treecreeper and Greenfinch added variety to the catch. The site is proving popular with the local Chaffinch population, with nine caught on this occasion. A rather chunky continental-type Blackbird was also caught with a wing length of 135mm and a weight of 108.3g. We closed the nets just as the next round of rain started.
The totals were: 32 birds including 16 retraps. 3 Redwing, 1 Blackbird, 1 Greenfinch, 1 Dunnock, 9 Chaffinch, 4 Great Tit, 9 Blue Tit, 1 Treecreeper, 3 Robin.
