We recently received news of one of the Stock Dove chicks we ringed this year, where they were found breeding in a Barn Owl next box near Newark-on-Trent. It had travelled due south for nearly 800 km only to be shot in the Charent-Maritime area on the French coast. Stock Doves are largely sedentary, and their median recovery distance is 6 km. However, we know from ringing that some young birds migrate south in the autumn. This bird was the 18th GB ringed Stock Dove to be recovered in France. There has only been one more foreign recovery and that was to Spain.
